Your pets' dental hygiene is an essential part of their health. Many health issues can be traced back to poor dental hygiene. It is extremely important for your pets' health to brush their teeth and gums regularly.
Good quality dry or canned food provides your pet with all the required nutrients they need, but it doesn't fight the build-up of plaque and tartar on their teeth. In the wild, cats and dogs' teeth are naturally cleaned by tearing through skin and bone. This helps remove these deposits much better than kibbles. Our pampered domestic pets don't hunt and eat their prey. They only need to walk over to their bowl and nibble as they see fit.
Without brushing, your cat and dogs' teeth get covered with a thin layer of plaque. Plaque is a mix of food residue, saliva proteins and bacteria. Plaque is soft, so brushing helps remove this layer. If left unbrushed this thin layer turns into hard tartar and sticks to their teeth. Once the tartar is formed, it can only be removed by a professional dental cleaning, or your pet may let you use your fingernail to scrap it off. Brushing your pets' teeth daily is the best way to disrupt plaque and bacteria formation.
